Microsoft slow after update
I work part-time on an investment bank’s IT helpdesk, 35 years of experience in IT in banking.
Every time Microsoft pushes a big update, the same thing happens:
Computers that were fine yesterday become sluggish
Apps take forever to open
Fans spin like jet engines doing nothing
Sound familiar?
Before you reinstall Windows or buy a new PC, run the 3 commands I use on every slow bank computer first.
They take some time, but fix 90 % of post-update slowdowns.
Keep in mind that it can take up to half an hour.
Well, that is on my old laptop.
Step 1
Open Command Prompt as Administrator
Right-click Start → Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)
Step 2
Run these 3 commands one by one (copy-paste, press Enter after each)
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Let the third one finish, it can take 5–20 minutes and needs internet
What do they do?
They check and repair the hidden Windows Component Store that gets corrupted during updates, the real reason most slowdowns happen.
I run these every month on all of our bank PCs. Works on Windows 11 Home, Pro, and Enterprise.
You can read more on DISM here
Step 3
No results? Then move to SFC /scannow.
